What to Know About Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids
In October 2022, the FDA authorized the sale and use of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids nationwide, which means anyone who wishes to purchase hearing aids without a prescription may do so.
Who Are Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids For?
These hearing aids may be useful for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss who only need sound amplification. According to one study, almost 86% of Americans 50 and older with hearing loss do not wear hearing aids.
The National Institutes of Health still recommends prescription hearing aids for people who do not hear louder sounds or struggle to hear conversations in quiet settings.
